Damn profs!
Every professor I’ve had this year has ranted about how students don’t address them properly in emails. They get upset with not being called “Dr” when they’ve worked so hard to earn the title. They hate emails that begin with “Hey!” They disapprove when you don’t sign off with a pleasant, “Thank you, *insert name here*.” And they appreciate it when the content of your email is orderly and to the point.
I do all this. Partly because I enjoy writing proper emails. I fret over the wording, re-work things, adjust my greeting and sign-off…
Don’t I, the student, deserve the same treatment?
Apparently not. I emailed my psych prof following all of the “how to not piss off a professor” guidelines and got the following reply:
Yes - there is a series of questions that you answer about the paper. You can get a sheet of the questions near the secretary’s desk in the Psychology department.
That’s it! No greeting, no sign-off. Nothing!
That’s the last time I’ll give a shit when emailing my profs.
